How Tiktok Changed My Skin

My skincare journey has been a rough and not so happy one. I have struggled with hormonal acne, hyperpigmentation, and oiliness for quite sometime now and I had the hopes that by the time I entered into my 20s, I would be done with the acne struggle. I have tried so many acne-catered soaps, treatments, and serums, and at this point, I was feeling defeated. I don't usually get a large amount of pimples but I do get the one cystic bump that hurts and makes me want to wear a paper bag over my head. It seemed like no matter how much I tried, I would constantly have one pesky pimple that would heal and another one would replace that one. This all changed when I downloaded TikTok.

Now, you may ask: "Victoria, What does this dancing app have anything to do with skincare?". Well, it may come as a surprise to many, as it did to me, that the app has countless creators for all sorts of topics, one of them being skincare. After hours and hours on the app, I came to the conclusion that I needed to (1) start double cleansing, (2) steer clear from any products with any sort of fragrance, and (3) wear sunblock like there was no tomorrow.

As a result of different product recommendations, I purchased the Then I Met You Cleansing Balm, Paula's Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant, and The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%.

1.  Then I Met You Cleansing Balm

This product was one I didn't know I needed but I really needed. I would generally take my makeup off with either makeup wipes or Albolene and toner. Which were not the most effective methods. The wipes would always irritate my face, specially around the eye and nose area. Albolene would remove my makeup but it felt like slathering vaseline all over my face and then tugging away with multiple cotton pads and toner. Both methods were wasteful and irritating. So when I found this product, I was extremely excited to try it out and it delivered! Basically, what you do is you grab a small amount of product with the scoop it comes with, slather it on your face, gently rub it around your face and eye area, and rinse it! That's it! Now, TikTok taught me to use another face wash after this balm, so I'm still using Drunk Elephant Best No. 9 and my face has never felt cleaner!

2. Paula's Choice 2% BHA Exfoliating Liquid

This was another game changer for me! I never thought I would be able to put a product on my face and see changes over night. I have used Clean & Clear, Proactive, Murad, Neutrogena, etc. and none of those products have helped my acne the way this product does! I put it on at night, 3 times a week, after the double cleanse and the next morning my skin is so radiant and smooth! One important note about this product is to make sure to wear sunscreen the next morning!

3. The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%

Another game changer for acne-prone skin has been this product. It doesn't mix well with the other product so I use it on the nights when I don't use the Liquid Exfoliant. This product has helped tremendously with reducing the oiliness from my face and I never thought I would see the day where a product actually helped with that problem!

My takeaway from all of this experience is to not discard things because they might not seem like something you would enjoy. I feel like it took me so long to download the app and because of quarantine and friends sending me videos, I decided to cave in and I'm so glad I did!
